MATHEMATICA

MATHEMATICA is a software by which numerical and symbolic computations can be conducted and both two- and three-dimensional graphics, as well as counter and density plots can be produced.

You can get the PC version of the program from CC-Library (Room No:109).

You can also get the PC versions of the program source from the following address:

ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/PackagePrograms/Mathematica/

See How to Download Software from FTP.CC

Notice: Users, who would connect to the FTP licensed software site with a browser other than Internet Explorer, shall write ftp://user_name@ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr to the address line. Due to the license agreements that are made, this site is accessible to METU personnel only.

Installation on PC (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7):

Follow these steps to install the Mathematica software:

For Mathematica 8:

1- Run Mathematica_8.0.0_WIN.EXE and complete the setup with desired customizations.

2- In the first run, an activation window asking for an activation key will appear, click "Other ways to activate" and select "Connect to a network license server". Enter

ccntserver.cc.metu.edu.tr

for the server name, click activate and accept the license agreements.

For Mathematica 7.0

1.) Run the "setup.exe" file in the Windows directory of Mathematica CD/DVD,

2.) "network license" option should be selected as the license type during the installation, and the license server name must be entered as "ccntserver.cc.metu.edu.tr"

You can run the Mathematica software after the installation is completed.

Mathematica on Unix Systems

You can run Mathematica 6.0 on beluga, orca, rorqual, narwhal and and install Mathematica 7.0 and 8.0 in your Linux, Mac or Windows PC.

You can start a MATHEMATICA session using one of the following commands:

math (in a text-based environment)

mathematica (in an X-Windows environment)

To run matlab on Unix servers and to use X-Windows environment please read  Information about XWINPRO and Cygwin/XFree86.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mathematica

Q: I get a "license expired" / "license server could not be found" error, what is the solution?

A: The license server has been recently (March 2009) moved to a new server, in the error message window click "password", select "network license" option as the license type and enter "144.122.202.4" as the license server name.

Q: I am running out of disc space because of the files that are automatically created whenever I run the software and/or the output files that I myself have created, can you increase my quota limits?
A: We have created a directory named "/temp" on central servers systems (such as beluga, orca, narwhal, rorqual, tasman); so that our users can execute and work with oversize files without experiencing disc space problems. By creating another directory within the "/temp" folder, you can carry out tasks and perform your operations. To create another directory within "/temp" folder, use the following command: "mkdir directory_name". You should be mindful of the fact that other users may also need space within this folder; so, after you are done with your work, do not forget to delete all the files you have created in the folder.

Q: I want to use the software from outside METU. How can I do it?
A: METU is bound by the restrictions which are arranged and specified expressly in the terms of software license agreements. According to these agreements, the licensed software can only be used solely for academic purposes and strictly within the boundaries of METU. It is expressly forbidden to use the software from outside METU.
