22 March 1999 - Change in e-mail adresses

The ongoing improvement studies about e-mail services at METU have been recently completed and are presented below:

E-mail Adresses

As a consequence of the accomplished improvements on Unix servers which are in service for 24 hours/365 days, all student, academic and administrative personnel e-mail accounts defined on rorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr and orca.cc.metu.edu.tr servers will be changed as usernamemetu.edu.tr after April 5, 1999. Following these improvements, e-mails which are sent to e-mail accounts that are currently being used as, usernameroqual.cc.metu.edu.tr and usernameorca.cc.metu.edu.tr, will be accepted for 3 months. In order not to be affected negatively by this change, our users should re-subscribe to the off-campus discussion lists using the usernamemetu.edu.tr address until April 5, 1999. For this purpose, the required procedure is explained in detail;
at http://www.cc.metu.edu.tr/services/ol/pine/pine.html, for Pine Users,
at http://www.cc.metu.edu.tr/services/ol/pops.html, for POP 3 Users.

E-mail Server

In order to meet the increasing demand for the use of e- mail service through central Unix servers, the following changes have been made: For the userids defined on rorqual and orca servers which are available for interactive use, a new server named as mail.metu.edu.tr has been installed. This SUN Enterprise 450 model server, which contains 4 CPU's and 1 GB memory capacity, also offers POP and IMAP services. In order to be able to use the new e-mail server through the Windows-based programs that receive and send e-mail such as Eudora, Netscape, and Outlook Express, the required settings for our personnel and students are given at the following address in detail:
http://www.cc.metu.edu.tr/services/ol/pops.html
Those who use "pine" or similar programs for sending and receiving e-mail on rorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr or orca.cc.metu.edu.tr do not need to make any changes in the settings. Please call 210 3355 or send e-mail to hot-linemetu.edu.tr for your questions.

16 June 1999 - WARNING CIH Virus

The virus known as CIH, which is activated between April 26 and June 26, causes the loss of data on your hard disk. You should follow the instructions below in order to prevent any possible damages that may occur because of this virus;
1) First of all, copy all anti-virus programs under
    ftp://ftp.metu.edu.tr/.m4/virus/
to the C:\virus folder that you will create in your PC.
2) Of these programs, run "kill_cih.exe" program under DOS window (MS-DOS Prompt) using the commands,
    C:\cd virus
    C:\virus>kill_cih.exe

and determine if there exists any virus in your PC's memory. If there does not exist any virus in the memory, you may continue with step 3 to determine if the files in your hard disk are affected. If this program determines any virus in the memory, you may continue with step 3 after you start your computer using a system diskette ensuring that it is not infected by any virus.
3) From the Start button;
choose Shut Down and start your computer in DOS mode using;
   Restart Computer in MS-DOS mode
and clean the probable CIH virus, using the following commands (be sure to write the commands as they appear including the spaces);
    C:\cd virus
C:\virus>navc /doallfiles /repair/zips
Please consider that, these processes take a long time to apply.
4) After you return to Windows mode using the command,
    win
you will find "f-prot" program under C:\virus\f-prot\folder
From the Start button, choose Programs menu. Select Windows Explorer and run,
    C:\virus\f-prot>f-prot.exe
to determine if there exists any other virus in your PC.
5) We would like to remind you that it may be beneficial to define the BIOS settings as
    boot sector readonly (WRITE PROTECT)
in order to protect your PC from CIH and similar viruses. You may call 3355 hot-line number or send e-mail to hot-linemetu.edu.tr for your questions.

5 July 1999 - A Remind on the Change in e-mail adresses

We are addressing this notice to you as a reminder of the change in the central e-mail servers. As stated before, the e-mail addresses defined on central e-mail servers have been changed to usernamemetu.edu.tr on April 5, 1999. However, the usernamerorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr and usernameorca.cc.metu.edu.tr addresses have been preserved for a three-month period, so as to enable our users to make necessary changes on their accounts.
Noting that the three-month period is about to end, the e-mail servers will be accepting only the usernamemetu.edu.tr address after July 12, 1999. From this date on, for the users who haven't finished the necessary changes, the mails sent to either usernamerorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr or usernameorca.cc.metu.edu.tr will return with a warning indicating the change, which is;
    usernamemetu.edu.tr
It is, therefore, important that all users make the necessary changes that has been stated in the previous notification declared in 22 March, 1999, until July 12, 1999. Any further questions will be answered by our Hotline services. Phone number of METU Hotline service is 210 3355 and e-mail address is; hot-linemetu.edu.tr

10 August 1999 - Y2K Problem

For the purpose of determination and removal of any problems which may arise because of Year 2000 Problem, also known as "Millennium Bug" that will occur as a result of the defect in the design phase of computer systems and all embedded systems and interfaces, Computer Center has been continuing on several studies for the services in its responsibility. In this context, on the services listed below;
    Registrar's Office Automation System,
    Personnel Office Automation System,
    Dial-up service,
    Services on SP2 and "tasman",
    Web server,
    "ftp.metu.edu.tr" service,
    "ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr" service,
Run-time Environment Tests are planned to be implemented as a part of "Year 2000 Project". "Run-time Environment Tests" are one of the critical parts of the on-going studies. For our services other than those listed above, our users will not be affected by Year 2000 compliance tests since "Test Environments" will be formed.
For the "Run-time Environment Tests", August 21, 1999 will be accepted as the "New Year" by Computer Center. These tests have great importance for us to continue our services that we give to you without any problems. Year 2000 tests will start on August 20, 1999 Friday at 20:00 and will end on August 22, 1999 Sunday at 08:00. In order to complete Year 2000 tests successfully, services listed below will be closed within this period. Services closed between August 20, 1999, Friday, 20:00 - August 22, 1999, Sunday, 08:00:

12 August 1999 - Increase in the bandwidth

METU's national and international Internet access had been provided through ULAKNET lines with 2 Mbps bandwidth until now. METU Computer Center and ULAKBIM completed their ongoing studies in order to increase the bandwidth. As the result of these studies:
    On August 6, 1999, a new line with 2 Mbps bandwidth has been added which increased METU's ULAKNET access to 4 Mbps in total.
    By July 20, 1999, the international ULAKNET lines which previously had 6.5 Mbps bandwidth, have been offered to service with 10.5 Mbps bandwidth.

24 September 1999 - Proxy Server

A new proxy server has been installed to serve our users.
The proxy server is a program that speeds up internet access by saving the previously contacted addresses (graphs, pictures, html, etc). When the user wants to reconnect to these addresses, the proxy server offers this address locally, instead of trying to make a connection to the original address.
The proxy server will be tested between October 4-30,1999. Depending on the rate of use and your comments, necessary adjustments will be made to it.
The set up information to use the proxy server is available at this link
Please, e-mail hot-linemetu.edu.tr or call 3355 for your questions about the program.
