Dial-up Internet Connectıon Procedure - Windows Vista
You have to own a user code on the systems and a modem to be able to establish a modem connection with METU systems. The next thing you have to do is to do the required configurations. The document below includes all the steps to carry out Windows VISTA connection configuration process. Installing the modem Before doing the configuration, your computer should detect your modem. If it's not automatically done: Choose Phones and Modems from Control Panel . Select Modems in the window that is displayed. Then click Add button. Click Next to make Windows detect your modem. This process is explained to detect the modem automatically; if you would rather detect it manually, follow these steps: Select Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list option and then click Next button.Click Have Disk on the next page that is displayed. After the detection of modem is completed, the name and the type of your modem will be displayed on the next window. Click OK button and go to the next window. Click Finish button to finish the process. Configuring the Modem Now, to establish your dial-up connection, open the Control Panel on Start menu. Select Internet Options and double click the mouse and then select Connections tab. Only put a check mark next to Never dial a connection expression. If you are unable to do this process, perform the other configuration steps at the first instance and come back to this page. Click Add button. In the window that opens choose Dial-up . You have to enter the dial-up phone number and your user name in the corresponding fields. You can choose any name you like for the Connection name If you are METU academic or administrative staff , dial one of 08223141014 or 2104300 (if you are calling this number from Ankara you'll have to pay local telephone bill, if you are calling this number from outside Ankara, you'll have to pay long distance telephone bill). If you are METU student then dial 2104300. Proceed by clicking on the Connect button. In the windows that opens, select Set up the connection anyway and continue. In the window that opens, press the Close button. On the Internet Properties window, double click the created network (metu) or click the Settingsbutton and choose Automatically detect settings option. At the same window press Properties button, and select the Options tab at the opened window. Put a check mark next to Redial if line is dropped expression and select Security tab. Put a check mark in the box next to the Show terminal window expression. Select the Networking tab at the same window and choose the options that shown in the below picture. Then select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option and click the Properties button. Put a check mark in the box next to the Use the following DNS server adresses expression and enter the Server IP numbers as 144.122.199.90 and 144.122.199.93 in the related fields. Then click Advanced button. Select the DNS tab at the opened window and select Append these DNS suffixes and enter the metu.edu.tr and cc.metu.edu.tr addresses with "Add" button. Click OK button on the pages displayed afterwards and exit. Making the dial-up connection After you establish the procedure above, go to Start menu and then choose Connect to and click on your connection to make your dial up connection. Establish the connection by clicking on the Dial button. Enter your login name and password belonging to your METU account as Annex username and Annex password. Enter ppp on the METU: command line and click Enter . Then click on the F7 key and Done button. Your connectýon must have been established. Using Scripts You can use the scripts below while connecting, if you do not want to type "user name", "password" and "ppp" everytime you establish a connection. These scripts will type them for you. The steps are as the following: 1. Download "metu-pri.scp" to your computer for 0 822 314 10 14 Metu PRI lines. 2. Download "metu-cs.scp" to your computer for 2104300 Metu analog lines. 3. Double-click on the connection icon on your Desktop, click "Properties". a. Unselect "Show terminal window". b. Select "Run Script". Click on "Browse" and find the right script you downloaded. ("metu-pri.scp" if you dial in 0 822 314 10 14 ; "metu-cs.scp" if you dial in 2104300 analog lines) c. Click "OK" 4. You will see the "Connect ODTÜ" window, write your user name and password. Then click "Dial".
