January 12 - 18 - New Modem Connections for Windows 95 PPP System

Windows95 PPP is a modem service provided by METU CC, which helps remote accessing to the services on the central servers via modem connections (210 4300 and 210 1040) and the documentation explaining the connection settings of Windows95 PPP is now available to all users on the page

February 23 - March 1 - The number of the modem connections have been increased

The number of the modem connections have been increased. This is a service provided by METU CC and these modem connections help the accessing of the users to the Internet. The PBX with the current phone number 210 1155 is for the academic and administrative personnel and has 28 connections. March 16 - 22 - "POP3" Server for the e-mail

New regulations have been introduced to provide high-speed and efficient electronic mail service operating on the Unix based central servers. For this reason, the necessary configurations should be applied on the programs -like Netscape Internet Explorer, Eudora etc. which use "POP3" server for the e-mail.

April 27 - May 3 - Maple V

The Maple V program can be run on rorqual and orca systems with the command exmaple. May 18 - 22 - A Seminar from Microsoft Turkey Branch

On May 25st, 1998, between 14.00-16.00 ,a seminar will be given at Cultural Convention Center Room/Lounge B by the represantatives of Microsoft Turkey branch. All the METU staff and the students are welcome to this seminar where the products of Microsoft will be demonstrated publicly. June 22 - 26 - The new version of Marc & Mentat

The new version of the Finite Element Analysis program Marc & Mentat, is now available to users in the university.Marc K7.2 and its older version Marc K6.2 is on the first 4 nodes on the nautilus system, Mentat 3.2 and its older version Mentat 3.1 is on the rorqual system. To run Mentat 3.2 program, enter the command
    mentat
on rorqual system.
To run Marc K7.2 program, enter the command
    run_marc
on nautilus system.
To run the older versions of Marc K6.2 and Mentat 3.1, enter the commands
    /academic/marck62/tools/run_marc
    /academic/mentat231/bin/mentat

November 23 - 27 Kasım - New Application Server: TASMAN

A new UNIX based application server is available to academic and administrative personnel. The programs that are described in detail on the following Internet address "http://www.metu.edu.tr/tasman" can be run on the server,
    "tasman.cc.metu.edu.tr"
having 4 CPU, 1 GB Memory and Solaris 2.6 operating system. The user-ids and passwords on the server addressed as "rorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr" are also valid for the new server. You can ask your related questions to the e-mail address hot-linemetu.edu.tr or to the phone number 210 33 55.


December 7 -11 - The Modification of the IP Addresses

The servers with the addresses
    rorqual.cc.metu.edu.tr and orca.cc.metu.edu.tr
which are used interactively, and the server with the address
    narwhal.cc.metu.edu.tr
which is used for giving WWW services, were connected to and operating on Token-Ring Backbone Network until December 9th, 1998. After the introduction of ATM technology for the improvement of the University Backbone Network, the aforementioned servers have begun to operate on this newly introduced ATM Backbone. As a result of this technological adjustment, the IP addresses have also changed as indicated below. The servers are still accessible by the computers within the campus despite the fact that IP numbers have been modified. The only thing our users have to be careful about is, to use the DNS addresses instead of IP addresses for the servers.

December 29 - January 4 1999 - Licenced FTP Site Permission Program

A program is developed to get permission automatically on METU-CWIS in order to have an access to FTP Site "ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr" which has the licensed programs to be used in academic studies within the METU Campus. This program is available on the page:
    http://www.metu.edu.tr/cgi-bin/ftp/ftpcc
There is no need to call the number 210 33 55. The only thing required is that our users fill out and send the form found on this page and have the permission to access ftp site with the address ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr whenever they want.
