January 11st 2001 - 2000-2001 Spring Semester Registrations Please visit and follow the web page in the address below for up-to-date information and possible changes regarding 2000-2001 Spring Semester Registrations. February 2nd 2001 - CC Library Service Computer Center carried out an automation project to better serve the users and facilitate the convenient usage of CC Library. The following features about the library products can be accessed with rorqual codes on an electronic medium; search, reserve, cancelling of a reserved product, patron history. The details about how to use the program are available in the HELP pages of this address. February 19th 2001 - New Server Apart from our interactively used "orca","rorqual" and "narwhal" servers, a new server has been added to our systems. The new server, "beluga", is accessible via "telnet" and "ssh" programs. For more detailed information about our new server, please visit the web address. February 20th 2001 - Server maintenance operation
Maintenance operations, which will be carried out on our systems between March 3rd - 4th, will cause some recurrent interruptions on our services. The scheduling of the maintenance operations is as follows:
March 4, 2001 Maximum effort will be put forth to remove unexpected problems that we may encounter during the maintenance operations. These efforts to render services available again may take time, and this may in turn cause some interruptions on the services. February 21st 2001 - CISN (Computing & Information Services Newsletter) CISN (Computing & Information Services Newsletter), one of the printed publications of Computer Center, was published in 1997 for the last time. It is a pleasure for us to announce that this year CISN is started once again in the form of a bimonthly web publication and will be available on the web address below. February 23rd 2001 - About Newsgroups Server The server for newsgroup service cannot be fed from Ulaknet since 10 am February 12th, 2001. We have been informed via the communication established with Ulaknet that this is a problem caused by the connection between Ulaknet and UUNET, however, Ulaknet was not able to give information about the exact date when they can entirely get rid of the problem. Our local newsgroup service continues to run without an interruption. February 26th 2001 - SPSS Software Servers SPSS (the statistical analysis software), was available only on our "orca","rorqual" and "narwhal" servers until February 9th, 2001. But now, in addition to "orca","rorqual" and "narwhal" servers, you can also run SPSS from our new server "beluga" (IBM F80, AIX 4.3.3). For more detailed information, please visit http://www.cc.metu.edu.tr/services/soft/package.html February 27th 2001 - Web Page About Viruses A new page is launched where you will be able to find general up-to-date information about computer viruses and the details about the licensed anti-virus software that is currently serving to our users. March 2nd 2001 - The Problem about the Newsgroups Due to some technical problems that occurred between Ulaknet and the newsgroup server inbetween February 12th-28th, there had been interruptions on the newsgroup services of METU and the universities in Turkey, all of which were being fed from Ulaknet. We have been informed via the communication established on March 1st, 2001 with Ulaknet that Ulaknet has changed its newsgroup server. Presently, the distribution of articles is running without a problem. Due to the fact that Ulaknet has changed its newsgroup server, it is possible that our users may now find newsgroups that were previously unavailable or they may not find the newsgroups that were previously available. For this reason, the users need not try to fix this by changing their usual settings. Our local newsgroup service continues to run without a problem. March 2nd 2001 - PC Rooms Available During Religious Holiday 9th Dormitory PC Room will be open between 10a.m.-5p.m. during the Religious Holiday (March 3rd - 11th, 2001) March 2nd 2001 - MSC.Superforge-MSC.Patran MSC. Patran and MSC. Superforge software are purchased and installed by Computer Center to serve METU community within the scope of licensed software. MSC. Patran provide users with a software environment that performs simulation of mechanical products. MSC. Superforge provide engineers with a software environment that helps to analyze forging processes by performing forging simulation. March 14th 2001 - Mathcad Software Aiming to serve METU community within the scope of licensed software, Computer Center has now made available Mathcad software, which is useful in solving equations in engineering and mathematical sciences. March 15th 2001 - Temporary Breakdown on Services Due to a technical problem on the UPS of Computer Center, our central services have experienced a temporary breakdown on March 15th, 2001 (15:30 p.m.). March 22nd 2001 - User Seminars User Seminars will be held by Computer Center between April 2 - 13, 2001 aiming to provide an opportunity for the university community to know the computer world better. These seminars are free of charge and all the members of METU are sincerely welcome. For more detailed information about seminars and registration, please visit the following web address. http://www.cc.metu.edu.tr/services/seminars.html March 23rd 2001 - PC Rooms The management of PC Rooms has been improved as a result of both the evaluation of the questionairre about the PC Rooms, which was performed between March 20th - 24th, 2001, and the evaluation of the user demands that were conveyed to hot-line. The improvements are as follows: 16 PCs (Pentium120/32MB) were released as a result of the improvements carried out in the PC Room at the upper floor of Dormitory 2. These PCs contributed to the opening of the 3rd PC Room in Dormitory 2. The demands about the issue urged us to render the Social Sciences PC Room available in week days from 12:00 to 13:00 PM as well. March 29th 2001 - SAS User Group International SeUGI 19 conference (The 19th SAS User Group International) will be held in Florence, Italy, between May 29th - June 1st, 2001. If you would like to attend, please remember that the deadline to apply is March 30th, 2001 and there is a registration fee for the conference. The pages with the new design will be introduced on April 2nd, 2001, including a new feature called "Turkey Site Index". This index lists web sites with ".tr" extensions and is developed by METU Internet Society. April 4th 2001 - Activities of Computer Center during the Internet Week Included in the notable activities of Computer Center during Internet Week are the seminars that will be given to students in various primary schools, which are in the scope of "Contribution to Eight-year Basic Education" project. The training seminars will be given between April 16-19, 2001 and will include vital topics such as introducing the concept of Internet, its main principles and functionality.
April 9th 2001 - Problem in Newsgroups Server The disk of our server for Newsgroup service is experiencing a physical problem since 1 a.m. on April 7th, 2001. The service is currently unavailable. We are trying to fix the problem in the shortest possible time. April 10th 2001 - Router Device Problem At 2 p.m. on 9 April 2001, a problem on the router device, which constitutes a significant component of campus backbone network, brought about some reccurent interruptions on the network access within the campus. The problem was fixed on the very same day at 9 p.m. April 18th 2001 - TTNET Internet Connection Capacity Increased The capacity of the Wide Area Network connection between TTNET and our University has been increased from 8Mbps to 16Mbps on April 16th, 2001. April 24th 2001 - CISN April Issue The second issue of CISN (Computing & Information Services Newsletter), which is one of the printed publications of Computer Center, is now available on the address below. May 14th 2001 - Licenced Software Seminars The seminars and applications about "Marc" and "Patran" software, which are among the licensed software of METU, will be between 17-18th May 2001. The seminars are free of charge and we kindly welcome all our users to the events. Detailed information can be found on the address below. June 8th 2001 - Laser Print Out service Important Notice The cost of the printer service, which has not been changed since 1999, has become 30.000 TL per pages by June 11, 2001. The minimum page quota will be kept as 50 pages. The fee of the printer service is still paid to Ziraat Bank METU Branch Account No 32459. June 15th 2001 - METU Web Pages Summer Design "METU in Four Seasons" continues to provide the main theme for the new designs of METU Web Pages in the changing seasons. The pages with their new design for summer, and the search engine service, which is very recently renewed, will be introduced on June 18th, 2001. "Search Tools" page will provide the access for search engine service. July 19th 2001 - Electronic List Application Form A new "Electronic List Application Form" has been created and users can apply to electronic lists over web via this form. The departments/units can access to this application form using their ECS (Electronic Communication System) Codes and our members can access to the form using their user codes defined on the central servers. July 24th 2001 - ListProc Web Interface "ListProc Web Interface", which allows many features of electronic lists (such as subscriptions, accessing archives and list ownerships) to be accessed in a web environment, is now available on the web address below. July 25th 2001 - McAfee Antivirus Program virus update files McAfee Antivirus Program virus update files can be obtained from ftp://ftp.metu.edu.tr/popular/virus-updates/mcafee. For installation instructions click the link below. July 25th 2001 - W32/SirCam@MM Virus W32/SirCam@MM virus, which was originated on July 17th, 2001, attempts to send itself and local documents to all users found in the Windows Address Book and email addresses found in temporary Internet cached files (web browser cache). Please follow the instructions explained in the following address in order to prevent any possible damages that may occur because of this virus. August 27th 2001 - Notice for Our Students Due the fact that the "insecure passwords" on the central servers have been changed on May 22nd, 2001, our students, who were not able to obtain their password envelops before registration dates, will not be allowed to register themselves on the registration environment during 2001-2002 Fall Semester Registrations. For this reason, our students, whose passwords have been changed, should check the places for obtaining their passwords on the following address before semester registrations, and obtain their password envelopes from the locations indicated. September 8th 2001 - Linux Scholar Challenge Contest A linux competition, in which the university students can participate, is going to be held. September 9th 2001 - Problem with TTNET Connections The TT-NET connection, which is one of the main off-campus connections of METU, is experiencing a problem that causes inconvenience while accessing to password protected sites (www.yahoo.com, www.mail.com etc.) and problems about e-mail traffic. We are currently working together with TT-NET authorities to fix the problem. While this process goes on, the off-campus connection is provided intermittently over ULAKNET. September 13th 2001 - Virus Announcement - W32/Magistr.b@MM Information can be found about W32/Magistr@MM virus and removal instructions in the address below. September 19th 2001 - Virus Announcement - W32/Nimda@MM A dangerous computer virus W32/Nimda@MM started spreading on September 18th, 2001. Detailed information can be found at the address below. October 22nd 2001 - Technical Problem with the Newsgroups Service due to ULAKNET Our newsgroup server cannot be fed from Ulaknet since October 17th, 2001 (3 p.m.) We have been informed by Ulaknet that this problem was experienced due to a breakdown on the server (T-Online) that provides news to Ulaknet. For this reason, Ulaknet has temporarily ceased the news traffic with all the universities that it provides newsgroup service for. It is estimated that the problem will be fixed within 2 or 3 days. Our local newsgroup service continues to run without a problem. November 2nd 2001 - User Seminars User Seminars will be held by Computer Center between November 12-23, 2001 aiming to provide an opportunity for the university community to know the computer world better. November 6th 2001 - New METU Web Pages "METU in Four Seasons" have been providing the main theme for the design of METU Web Pages since November 2000. Since the season has turned slowly to autumn, the appearance and the content of pages that are revised will be introduced on November 7th, 2001. Modifications have been applied on the new pages according to the suggestions and opinions of our users. Search engine has been improved, direct links to current announcements/activities pages have been provided, the content has been reorganised and new topics have been added. You can send your suggestions and comments about the web pages via the "Feedback Form" which is also available on our pages. November 16th 2001 - CC Licensed Software Questionnaire A questionnaire about the Licensed Software Service of METU Computer Center has been formulated to receive feedback from the users. We would greatly appreciate if you fill out this questionnaire until November 23rd, 2001. Evaluation of your answers will reveal the opinions of our users about licensed software service, which will, in turn, contribute to the delivery of quality software service within University. November 30th 2001 - Repairment of the Beluga Server Because of the hardware breakdown in beluga server, which is one of our interactive user systems, there have been some problems at intervals. In order to fix the problem there will be an interruption in the systems, at the end of the day, at November 30th. We apologize from all our users. November 30th 2001 - Virus Announcement (W32/BadTrans.B-mm) W32/BadTrans.B-mm virus is propagating through e-mail attachment, affecting especially MS Outlook Express users. For more information about the virus and removal instructions, refer to the following page. December 5th 2001 - Virus Announcement (W32/Goner.A@mm) W32/Goner.A@mm virus started to spread over internet on December, 4th, through mIRC, ICQ and e-mail. Parts of e-mail are: Subject: Hi Body: How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry, I promise you will love it! Attachment: Gone.scr Please delete e-mail without running attachment file. For more information about the virus and removal instructions, refer to the following page December 6th 2001 - Interactive web site - HELPDESK A newly implemented service of Computer Center will undergo a testing period. The service offers an interactive web site to our users where they can convey their problems, suggestions, opinions and complaints about the services of Computer Center. The service is available 24 hours in all days of the week at http://helpdesk.metu.edu.tr December 28th 2001 - Interactive Registrations The student registration applications on the first day of the Interactive Registrations (Wed, Feb 6th, 2002) is scheduled to start according to the students' academic years. The registration program shall be available to the students attending to different academic years in the hours as specified below: 9 o'clock and after: Graduate Students, Seniors(4th Grade) 11 o'clock and after: Juniors(3rd Grade) 13 o'clock and after: Sophomore(2nd Grade) and Freshmen(1st Grade) Information about Interactive Registrations shall be announced via Student Bulletin and METU Main Web Pages. |
